Pale gowns and dark evening clothes

Two couples dance in a grand room under a chandelier, with tall windows and heavy curtains behind them. String musicians play at the right, and a woman in a pink dress sits at the left.

The white gown of the nearer dancer spreads across the centre of the picture, and the men's dark evening clothes make the pale dresses look even lighter. Folds of fabric sweep down to the patterned floor, where warm browns and reds pick up the colours of the room.

Large curves and small ones

In the full photograph there is a lot to follow: raised arms, turned heads, the musicians bent over their instruments. The small curves of the instruments sit right beside the much larger curves of the skirts, which gives the scene its sense of rhythm.

For a room where music is played

Every figure in this room was stitched by hand. The tapestry has the feel of a special evening out and would suit a living room, a dining room or a room where music is played.

It is a single piece, and the only ballroom in the collection.
