Stitches that shimmer like velvet

Princess Diana turns slightly towards the viewer in a dark purple dress that leaves her shoulders bare. Her short hair is swept back from her forehead, drop earrings hang beside her face, and the background is a pale, cool grey.

The dress is far from one flat colour. Violet, blue and near-black stitches, all placed by hand, break it into a shimmering pattern, a little like velvet catching the light. Above it, soft changes of cream, pink and brown shape her neck, face and hair.

The one who does not smile

Her expression is calm and composed, lips closed, which sets this portrait apart from the two smiling ones elsewhere in the collection. The front photograph shows the actual needlework and its cloth border.

Striking against a light wall

The deep purple would look striking against a light wall in a living room or bedroom. In the gold-framed illustration at the top of the page, a dark inner edge picks up the darkest tones of the dress.

There is only one Diana in purple.
